LIVE: Twin Falls-Jerome girls

Post Published: 06 February 2010

This blog will update from the Great Basin Conference semifinal game between Jerome and Twin Falls. The winner clinches a berth in the Class 4A state tournament and will host the Great Basin Conference championship game on Thursday. For the latest updates, refresh your browser.

Twin Falls scores the final 18 points of the game, including one at the horn, but it’s far too little, too late. Jerome will host the Great Basin Conference championship game Thursday, and more importantly, the Tigers qualify for the state tournament in two weeks’ time in Meridian. Twin Falls will play Tuesday for a state berth against Minico or Wood River. Thanks for checking in, see you next time.

FINAL: JEROME 53, TWIN FALLS 42

0:16 Q4 – Aimee Hiebert with a 1-and-1 effort, but she misses the front end. Twin Falls will get the last shot.

0:32 Q4 – Jund with a 3-pointer to make the game a 13-point affair. Jerome in no hurry of course, with less than a minute to go.

1:05 Q4 – Jund hits a little runner to carve the gap to 16. Jerome throws it out of bounds on the other end.

1:37 Q4 – Another long 3 from Grubbs-Imhoff makes it 53-35.

1:52 Q4 – Jerome entering a stall to try and work the remaining time off the clock.

2:15 Q4 – It’s 53-32 now, with another free throw from Twin Falls. Both teams subbing liberally.

4:10 Q4 – I stand corrected. Thibault comes back in for Maddison Blevins. Josie Jordan gets fouled in the act of shooting and gets 1 of 2 to go. 53-31.

4:28 Q4 – Williams hits a shot and is fouled. She misses the free throw, but Twin Falls is up to 30.

4:48 Q4 – Grubbs-Imhoff drops another 3-pointer and then steals the ball and gets fouled on the layup (Burnham’s fourth). She misses the first free throw and makes the second and it’s now 53-28. This horse left the stable three quarters ago, of course.

6:04 Q4 – A long sequence of passing draws applause from the fans as Jerome looks to salt some time away. Callen and Thibault exit, presumably for the final time.

7:33 Q4 – Callen hits a baseline 15-footer to push the lead back to 29. An errant shot from Twin Falls gives Jerome the chance to crack the 30-point mark. No running clock in districts or state, however.

END OF THIRD QUARTER: JEROME 51, TWIN FALLS 24: Mallory Jund steals the ball while Jerome’s bench is trying to give instructions for the final shot. Jund’s layup ends up being the last shot and Jerome will start the final period with the ball and a 27-point lead.

0:52 Q3 – Callen turns provider in the low block, finding Garey for a long 2. Twin Falls again throws it out of bounds. Bruins losing their composure a little bit. Jerome up 51-22.

1:14 Q3 – Callen stuffs Josie Jordan’s scoop attempt, then throws it out of bounds off of her. Heady play from the Seattle Pacific-bound senior. Timeout Twin Falls.

1:27 Q3 – Smith with a power move to the basket to push the lead back to 27.

2:01 Q3 – Smith shoves Clark’s shot right back in her face. Twin Falls keeps the ball out of bounds, but Bartlett airballs a 3-point attempt and Jerome takes over.

2:49 Q3 – Garey stuffs Williams in the low block. Still 47-20. Until Nielsen drops a long 2, that is.

4:04 Q3 – Brylee Bartlett steps on the sideline with the ball, then Burnham cans a 3-pointer off Thibault’s assist. Twin Falls throws it away on the other end. Thibault gets fouled going to the basket and hits both shots. Jerome’s rolling, now up 47-20.

4:31 Q3 – Taylor Williams is fouled in the act of shooting and hits both foul shots to cut the deficit back to 20. Not for long, though, as Callen goes to the rack and gets fouled. She hits both free throws (she doesn’t miss many) and it’s 42-20.

5:16 Q3 – It’s so end to end you’d think it was a hockey game. Both teams trade misses then Smith strips Kelsey of the ball and Burnham goes to the other end. She blows the layup but Carrie Thibault is there for the board. She’s fouled in the act of shooting and hits both to push the lead back to 20. Smith hits a short jumper on a Thibault assist and the lead is now 40-18.

6:36 Q3 – Callen goes coast to coast for a layup with a nifty stepthrough. Erin Grubbs-Imhoff drains an NBA 3 on the other end and it’s 36-18.

7:15 Q3 – Baylie Smith stuffs Alexin Clark and Callen then forces a jump ball. Garey drains another bucket and she’s now got 13. 34-15 Jerome.

THIRD QUARTER: Both teams are back out to start the third period. Twin Falls takes the ball, attacking the south end of the gym. Just in case anyone was unclear.

HALFTIME STATS: Aubree Callen leads all scorers with 13 points for Jerome on 4-for-7 shooting from the field and a perfect 5-for-5 on the line, while Tinley Garey is right behind her with 11. Jazlyn Nielsen has eight to pace Twin Falls. Callen also has eight rebounds and five steals (she’s on pace for a triple-double), while Nielson has four boards for the Bruins.

They just auctioned off a John Stockton/Karl Malone-era Utah Jazz autographed basketball for a little under $500. Considering they’re both sure to be in the Hall of Fame one day, that’s a bit of a steal.

For all the talk coming from Twin Falls, it was all Jerome, especially in the first quarter. On the opening tip the teams got confused which basket they were going toward, and Jazlyn Nielsen was all alone under the Twin Falls basket to give the Bruins an early lead. Jerome tied it at 2 and then the fire alarm goes off. Everyone (well, mostly everyone because it was a short alarm) left the building and when we all got back in Jerome exploded on a 15-4 run to make it 17-6 and the lead has been 12-18 from that point on. Twin Falls chirped a lot about how much it wanted Jerome in this game, but the Tigers chose to do their talking on the floor.

HALFTIME: JEROME 32, TWIN FALLS 15

1:55 Q2 – Haylee Burnham surges to the basket and dishes to Tinley Garey, who extends Jerome’s lead to 17.

2:23 Q2 – Malllory Jund drains a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 13. At the other end Allie Kelsey gets in Callen’s way and they both go crashing to the ground. Kelsey, who got the worst of it, picks up the foul. Callen hits both ends of the 1-and-1 and it’s 30-15 Jerome.

3:08 Q2 – Aubree Callen with a pair of free throws to push the lead to 28-9. Jazlyn Nielsen counters with a 3-point jumper at the other end.

3:23 Q2 – Sorry folks, but we had a slew of technical difficulties, and a fire alarm that prompted an exit that prevented me from working on it in the interim. In any event, we’re back on Magic Valley Overtime rather than the conventional mode, which will be back next time I’m sure. Sorry for all the confusion.

In any case, we join the game with Jerome sporting a 26-9 lead.

Pearce X-rays reveal no fracture

Post Published: 06 February 2010

By David Bashore – Times-News writer

X-rays taken on Kameron Pearce’s right forearm late Friday night didn’t reveal a fracture, Jerome coach Joe Messick said Saturday.
Pearce left Friday’s game against Burley seconds after the opening tip when he landed hard on an alley-oop attempt after colliding with a Burley player on his way to the basket. He appeared to hit both his hand and his head on the ground, but Messick said Pearce’s arm was the greater issue.
Pearce and the Jerome boys basketball team are now in wait-and-see mode. Pearce may have another exam on Monday to check for a hairline fracture or anything else an X-ray might have missed if the injury shows no improvement.
Jerome next plays Wednesday at Wood River before wrapping up the regular season at Twin Falls on Friday.

On the recruiting trail: CSI volleyball

Post Published: 04 February 2010

By David Bashore – Times-News writer

The formal signing day for NCAA institutions isn’t until April 15, but members of the national championship-winning College of Southern Idaho volleyball team are beginning to sort out their future plans.

Outside hitter Samantha Misa looks set to be the second Golden Eagle to cement her plans (middle blocker Torrey Hulsey signed with West Virginia during the early period). Misa makes her third official visit this weekend, to the University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif. Misa has visited Fresno State and Louisiana-Lafayette and has offers from both schools. Misa hinted toward Fresno State as the favorite at this point, and expects to make a decision Monday.

Right-side hitter Jessica Peacock, who had a change of heart and returned to the CSI program over the winter break instead of going home to Australia, will make official visits to the University of Florida as well as the University of the Pacific, CSI coach Heidi Cartisser said.

Libero Britani Hathorn has an official visit planned to East Tennessee State University. Cartisser said she expects Hathorn to generate further interest after next weekend’s spring tournament in Las Vegas.

“Libero is always the last position to fill so it can come pretty late in the game,” Cartisser said.

Middle blocker Amanda Filiaga is making an official visit to the College of Idaho this weekend.

On the incoming front, Cartisser said she has a few leads but no verbal or written commitments as of yet. As the national champion, CSI is in a position to be selective with its recruits, but “that doesn’t mean there’s not a panic mode,” Cartisser said.

All quiet on the signing day front

Post Published: 03 February 2010

By David Bashore, Bradley Guire and Ryan Howe — Times-News writer

It was a quiet signing day in the Magic Valley, with rumblings of interest but no plans cemented.

Twin Falls linebacker Zak Slotten, whose father said he wanted to try and play college football somewhere, said he was undecided as of Tuesday as to what his future held.

Jerome wide receiver Gus Callen hopes to walk on at a NCAA Division I team, but he said he will probably serve a two-year LDS mission first.

Signing day came and went without any reported signings by Mini-Cassia football players as well, although a handful are entertaining available options.

Jake Sagers, the all-state offensive/defensive lineman from Oakley, is 90-percent leaning toward Eastern Oregon, according to Oakley coach Tim Behunin.

Sage Warner, the all-state offensive/defensive lineman from Declo, has invitations on the table from NAIA and Division III colleges, according to coach Kelly Kidd, although Idaho State has expressed wavering interest.

Without any major offers, in addition to questions of academic eligibility, it appears Minico kicker Coltin Johnson’s best bet at this point is to follow the Spartan pipeline to Western Montana.

2010 College of Southern Idaho softball team

Post Published: 29 January 2010

2009 record: 47-12-2 (37-10 SWAC), second place in regular season, second place in Region 18 Tournament

Roster, including thoughts from CSI head coach Nick Baumert

No. 1 Michon Vanderpoel
5-1, INF, So., R/R, Taylorsville, Utah (Taylorsville)
“Last year, we tried to put Michon and Maddie (Allison) at second base and let them grow into that position. This year, we’ve moved ‘Mo’ to third base. She gives you a range of knowledge. She’s heady, comes from a great background, and she’ll help us out that way. We’re still open with that. We’ll give her, Chelsea (Buttars) and Marina (Groenewegen) a shot there and see what washes out in the end. She has the chance to be the sophomore who’s gone through the battles of last season, so she’ll be better prepared for this season.”

No. 2 Allie Thain
5-5, P, So., R/R, Rupert (Minico)
“We’re down one pitcher from where we had been. Allie’s that one year stronger and one year more experience. She’ll be able to get more innings. I don’t think she’ll be our No. 1 starter by any means, but she’ll contribute more this year and log some innings along the way. With four pitchers on the staff and with Kelsey (Bryant) being an everyday player for us at short stop, we’ll get some more innings out of Allie.”

No. 3 Brie Dimond
5-3, P/OF, So., L/L, Draper, Utah (Juan Diego)
“She’s just a notch slower and moves the ball incredibly well. She gives you the different look (as a left hander), moving it at different angles, breaking it. She’ll be really affective that way. She was 6-2 last year and had a decent ERA. We’ll look at increasing those numbers and her amount of innings.”

No. 4 Jessica Albertson
5-3, OF, Fr., L/R, Richland, Wash. (Hanford)
“Jess has converted a couple of ways. She was an infielder in high school, and we’ve converted her to an outfielder. She’s very athletic — a quick kid. We’re converting her from right-handed hitting to left-handed hitting. Mostly a lefty slapper. Runs really well, quick to first base. She has a good arm, and obviously if you can run well to first base, you can run well in the outfield. She’ll be hitting the No. 2 spot.”

No. 6 Marie Williams

5-3, OF, Fr., L/R, Delta, B.C.
“She’s kind of a little spark plug. She plays with a lot of energy and bounces around. She’ll be our leadoff kid, an extremely tough out whether she’s swinging away, slapping or bunting. She has a really good feel for what a leadoff hitter needs to do.”

No. 7 Mikkel Griffin
5-6, INF, Fr., R/R, St. George, Utah (Dixie)
“Mikkel will bounce back and forth between second base and outfield. She’s the type of athlete that runs well as a soccer player in high school. … Kind of a compact kid that swings the bat extremely well. I think she holds the Utah high school record for home runs. She’ll be maybe that No. 2 spot between her and Jess.”

No. 8 Kayla Powell
5-6, INF/C, So., R/R, Pocatello (Pocatello)
“She’s down-to-earth. Kalya’s taking on that role as a leader. She’s a lot more vocal this year, able to step up and say ‘We need to get this picked up.’ She’s kind of filling one of those leadership roles, and it’s neat to see. Kayla swings it, and we’ll have trouble keeping her out of the lineup. She’ll play a little bit of short stop while Kelsey’s (Bryant) pitching. Brie loves to throw to Kayla.”

No. 9 Chelsea Buttars
5-8, INF, Fr., R/R, Harrisville, Utah
“She’ll be behind ‘Mo’ and Marina if you went and did a depth chart on third base, but she’s working extremely hard on her swing. She’s like Kayla. She’s fun to be around and brings a lot of personality. She’ll grow into what we want to do.”

No. 10 Chelsea Nix
5-8, C, So., R/R, Show Low, Ariz. (Show Low)
“She’ll be better. She had a really good fall at the plate. When she hits it, she hits it hard. When it comes down to it, Chelsea will be our catcher in big games. She’s that quiet leader that gets the job done.”

No. 11 Generra Nielson
5-6, P, So., R/R, Blanding, Utah (San Juan)
“As good as ‘G’ was last year, she had another year of summer ball and fall with us here. … Just having that taste of being close in the region tournament and that taste of ‘I want to be the team that celebrates’ … she has that want and need to be that team. That’ll take you a long way.”

No. 12 Lyndi Miller
5-10, C/INF, Fr., R/R, Murray, Utah (Murray)
“Lyndi’s a big kid that swings the bat extremely hard. You know you’ve been in a battle when you face Lyndi at the plate. She’ll fill that (designated player) role or maybe part-time catcher. You’ll definitely see her in the lineup a bunch.”

No. 14 Marina Groenewegen
5-9, INF, Fr., R/R, Surrey, B.C.
“She’s a big kid that swings it well and has a good feel for the game. The weekend I saw Marina play for the first time, she had 10 home runs at a Portland tournament. She gets it going, gets on a roll, and I think she could be pretty dynamic.”

No. 21 MeChel Hunt
6-0, OF, Fr., L/L, Ogden, Utah
“MeChel, even with her size, runs really well. She hits the ball so hard, and it’s partly that she has long levers. We’re excited about MeChel. If she gets on a roll, it’ll be pretty exciting to see what she can do for us. She’ll start in right field. Sometimes I’ll hit a fly ball out there and think that I’ve really gotten it on the nose, and she’s out there just kind of jogging after it and runs it down. She wasn’t even sprinting. She’s the type of outfielder that makes it look easy.”

No. 23 Brittany Gonzales
5-9, INF, So., R/R, Tooele, Utah (Tooele)
“She’s going to need to be in the middle (of the lineup) for us — the 3 spot, the 4 spot, the 5 spot. Another year’s knowledge and another year’s confidence. She’s grown up a lot, not that she wasn’t a mature player last year. She’ll know what teams want to do against her and what to adjust. She’s expanded her hitting base and hitting knowledge. She won’t have those dips this year.”

No. 25 Kelsey Bryant
6-0, INF/P, Fr., R/R, Surrey, B.C.
“She’s like MeChel, a big kid with long arms and long legs. They’re able to do more things with the ball. Her spins are tight, and once that happens, the ball is going to start moving. She’s a short stop kid. You have to be careful with comparisons, but you look and see a Cal Ripken type short stop with her size and range. Not the quickest feet, but because of her size, she can get to a lot of balls. She’s an extremely balanced hitter, doesn’t strike out a lot. She didn’t hit for a lot of power in the fall, but has the capability to do that as well.”

Bashore’s Ballot, Jan. 26

Post Published: 28 January 2010

Here’s how Times-News writer David Bashore voted in the boys and girls prep basketball media polls for this week, with the ballot submitted Tuesday evening.

Ballot for Jan. 26
